It’s time to make plans to commemorate 200 years since the establishment of the village of Clarkesville on Dec. 10, 1823.

A committee is forming now to lead the yearlong celebration in 2023. Initial plans include co-branding with existing events such as the Mountain Laurel Festival, Red, White and Tunes, the Chattahoochee Mountain Fair and seasonal Sip & Strolls. The year will culminate with the annual Habersham County Christmas Parade, slated to be held in Clarkesville in December 2023.

Educational programming featuring a traveling history exhibit is also in the planning stages.

“We are excited to commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion,” said Mayor Barrie Aycock. “We want to celebrate our beloved town and its rich history as the county seat of Habersham County. We look forward to partnering with our local businesses and civic organizations to bring special events and programming to the community.”

Community members are invited to serve on the committee, Aycock said.
